Staff Software Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer based in India.

This is a high-ownership engineering role for an experienced software professional joining a small, technically ambitious team. You will take complex and ambiguous problems from initial exploration through architecture, implementation, production, and continuous improvement. The role is primarily backend-focused while offering broad exposure across frontend, infrastructure, data systems, AI, and LLM integrations. You will have significant influence over product architecture, engineering practices, internal tooling, and technical culture. The environment values experimentation, autonomy, strong product judgment, and practical use of modern AI-assisted development workflows. • Own complex engineering problems end-to-end, from understanding the problem and defining the approach through architecture, implementation, production deployment, and iteration.
• Design simple, scalable, reliable systems and make sound architectural decisions based on technical and product requirements.
• Build primarily backend systems while contributing across frontend, infrastructure, data, AI, and other technical areas when required to solve broader problems.
• Rapidly prototype and test multiple approaches, using evidence, benchmarks, and experimentation to guide technical decisions.
• Work with AI tools, LLMs, agents, APIs, and external providers to identify and implement meaningful product and engineering improvements.
• Build automation, internal tooling, and workflows that increase individual and team productivity.
• Improve engineering quality, architecture, development practices, and technical processes across the organization.
• Identify opportunities to simplify systems, improve reliability, and create greater engineering leverage.
• Help other engineers resolve difficult technical challenges and contribute to a stronger overall technical standard.
• Take broad ownership beyond individual tickets or features, considering the long-term health and effectiveness of the systems being built.

Requirements:

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong track record of building, shipping, and owning production systems.
• Deep backend engineering expertise combined with sufficient technical breadth to work effectively across the stack when needed.
• Strong system design capabilities and sound architectural judgment.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and make effective decisions in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
• Strong ownership mindset and product judgment, with the ability to connect technical decisions to meaningful business and user outcomes.
• Experimental and iterative approach to engineering, including prototyping, benchmarking, automation, and continuous improvement.
• Ability to learn unfamiliar technologies quickly rather than being dependent on a specific technology stack.
• Strong interest in AI-assisted development and modern engineering workflows that improve productivity and technical leverage.
• Experience operating at Staff, Principal, Architect, or equivalent level is a strong advantage, although demonstrated impact and ability are valued more highly than job titles.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions and help other engineers solve complex problems.
