Software Engineer 1 (Backend)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Engineer 1 (Backend) based in India.

This is a remote backend engineering opportunity for an early-career developer looking to build reliable APIs and contribute to a fast-moving technology platform. You’ll work closely with experienced engineers on both new feature development and production issue resolution. The role combines hands-on development, debugging, testing, and continuous improvement of backend services. You’ll have the opportunity to work with Python, Django, Django REST Framework, MySQL, and modern development workflows. Engineers with an interest in frontend development can also contribute to Next.js and jQuery projects. The environment emphasizes ownership, experimentation, learning, and practical problem-solving. • Design, develop, test, and maintain backend APIs using Python, Django, and Django REST Framework.

• Build new backend features and contribute to the technical implementation of planned sprint work.

• Investigate, debug, and resolve production and on-call issues, prioritizing service reliability and customer impact.

• Optimize existing APIs and troubleshoot performance or functional issues to improve reliability and maintainability.

• Write and maintain automated tests to support code quality and stable releases.

• Work collaboratively with experienced developers throughout the software development lifecycle, including development, debugging, code improvement, and deployment.

• Use Git and GitHub/GitLab as part of collaborative development and version-control workflows.

• Apply an AI-first mindset when researching, troubleshooting, designing, and solving engineering problems.

• Contribute to frontend development using Next.js and jQuery when relevant experience or interest allows.

• Participate in a culture of experimentation, learning from failures, and continuously improving engineering practices.

Requirements

• 1+ year of professional full-time software development experience with Python.

• Hands-on experience with Django and/or Django REST Framework (DRF).

• Good understanding of MySQL and relational database concepts.

• Familiarity with Git and GitHub or GitLab.

• Strong debugging and online research skills, with the ability to independently investigate technical issues and identify practical solutions.

• Good problem-solving abilities, including the capacity to solve straightforward data structures and algorithms problems.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with other developers.

• An AI-first approach to solving technical and engineering problems.

• Ability to work independently, take ownership of assigned tasks, and operate effectively in a remote environment.

• Frontend experience with Next.js and/or jQuery is a plus but not required.
