Role Title: Manufacturing Engineer – Assembly
Location: Hosur, Tamil Nadu
Reporting Structure: Team Lead – ME Assembly
Team Name: Manufacturing Engineering – Assembly
The Manufacturing Engineering - Assembly team at Ather Energy is responsible for managing the end-to-end scope of manufacturing projects for both New Product Developments (NPDs) and existing electric vehicle lines. This team ensures process planning, tooling design, line integration, and continuous sustenance on the production floor.
Are you an industrial automation and manufacturing engineer who loves integrating hardware, robotics, and smart assembly tooling to build hyper-efficient production lines? We are looking for a Manufacturing Engineer to architect the next evolution of our high-volume EV production facilities.
In this role, you won't just be managing equipment vendors; you will be specifying, designing, and commissioning customized assembly equipment and automated cell solutions. You will integrate multi-axis robots, smart torque-control systems, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and poka-yoke mechanisms directly into our live production flow. If you love bridging the gap between mechanical design, PLC programming, hardware integration, and high-throughput production execution—this is your playground.
Process & Quality Documentation: Lead the generation and maintenance of Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA), and Control Plans across all vehicle assembly stages.
New Product Industrialization (NPI): Assist the Line Architect in industrialization processes, including Request for Quotation (RFQ), Design Approval Process (DAP), and machine installation and commissioning on the factory floor.
Tooling & Equipment Selection: Identify and specify equipment, tooling, assembly fixtures, and material handling facilities required for manual and semi-automated processes.
Root Cause Analysis & Line Support: Troubleshoot live line stoppages, quality spills, and component fitment issues using structured problem-solving methodologies (8D, 5-Why, Fishbone diagrams).
Cross-Functional DFM Bridge: Act as the technical liaison between Design/R&D teams and the factory floor to feed back Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) improvements.
Conversion Cost Reduction: Continuously optimize cycle times, eliminate bottlenecks, and streamline resource consumption to achieve unit conversion cost targets.
Engineering Change Management: Process engineering change requests (ECR/ECO) by assessing shop-floor impact, validating tooling, and executing seamless implementation on active lines.
Education: B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.
Experience:4-7 years of hands-on experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment (OEM 2-Wheeler / EV experience strongly preferred).
Poka-Yoke Implementation: Proven track record designing and integrating hardware- and software-assisted error-proofing mechanisms at assembly stations (e.g., smart torque controller interlocks, vision-assisted positioning, physical locating jigs).
Root Cause Analysis: Expertise in leading structured problem-solving initiatives using 8D, 5-Why, and Fishbone methodologies to resolve assembly line non-conformances and shop-floor disruptions.
Quality Frameworks: Hands-on experience developing and updating PFD, PFMEA, and Control Plans specifically for vehicle or powertrain assembly.
Design & CAD Tools: Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks) for station design, line layout planning, and fixture design.
Automation & Lean: Practical knowledge of Lean Manufacturing (VSM, Line Balancing, 5S), smart torque tooling, PLCs, and MES (Manufacturing Execution System) shop-floor traceability.
Engineering Change Management: Deep understanding of change request processing, cross-impact analysis, and shop-floor rollout execution.
Smart Torque Tools: Hands-on experience with error-proofing via DC electric nutrunners (Atlas Copco, Desoutter) configured for torque-angle tracking, automated multi-spindle fixtures, and tool interlocks.
Computer Vision Inspection: Familiarity with automated vision checks (Keyence, Cognex, or custom edge AI) for wire harness connector seating, pin alignment, and surface defect detection.
Digital Twin & Process Simulation: Hands-on experience with Discrete Event Simulation software (Siemens Tecnomatix Plant Simulation, FlexSim) to model line throughput, AGV traffic, and bottleneck scenarios before physical setup.
GD&T Proficiency: Strong working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T per ASME Y14.5 / ISO 1101) to interpret drawings and resolve complex assembly fitment issues on the line.
