Our 95,000 employees work across more than 150 countries to put patients first — developing innovative medical technologies that improve the lives of 72+ million patients each year. A Day in the Life
As an Associate Engineering Director at Medtronic, you will be a second-line leader accountable for a software organization spanning multiple teams and product areas. You will lead through both engineers and other managers, owning the health, capability, and delivery performance of your organization. Where an Engineering Manager drives a team, you will shape the technical and organizational strategy across teams, build the leadership bench beneath you, and serve as a primary partner to R&D, Quality, Regulatory, and Program Management leadership on multi-year roadmap.
You Will:
· Lead a multi-team software organization (typically 40+ engineers) designing and developing software applications for medical devices across web, mobile, desktop, and cloud.
· Manage, coach, and develop Engineering Managers and senior technical leads; build succession plans and a strong leadership pipeline within your organization.
· Own end-to-end delivery across your operating unit: capacity and resource planning, multi-project prioritization, dependency management, risk escalation, and executive-level reporting on commitments and metrics.
· Set technical direction and architectural standards in partnership with Principal Engineers and Architects; make and defend build/buy/platform decisions.
· Partner with the broader R&D organization (Quality, Systems, Regulatory, Clinical) and with global sites to align on design controls, V&V strategy, and submission readiness.
· Define and institutionalize sustainable product development processes; drive continuous improvement in engineering practices, quality, and cycle time across teams, not just within one team.
· Own hiring strategy, workforce planning, vendor/partner engagement, and budget inputs for your organization.
· Represent the software organization to OU and site leadership, and in design reviews, phase gates, and audits.
· Remove systemic barriers, resolve cross-team conflicts, and create the conditions for teams to deliver predictably.
· Champion a culture of engineering excellence, psychological safety, patient safety, and compliance.
