Role Overview
We are looking for a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to support and enhance enterprise applications used to manage complex product, regulatory, and customer data at Ithos. This is a hybrid role: the candidate will be a capable full-stack developer on the existing Java stack who also owns test automation and quality practices for the team.
The ideal candidate combines hands-on Java 8 / Java EE development experience with strong test automation skills across UI, API, and data layers, and is comfortable balancing feature development with building and maintaining automated test coverage.
Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), regulated industries, manufacturing, life sciences, or formula-based product environments is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
Development
• Develop and maintain enterprise application features using Java 8 and Java EE/J2EE, within the existing MVC architecture (Servlets, EJBs, DAOs, DTOs).
• Work with JPA, Hibernate, JDBC, and SQL for database integrations, and build/consume REST APIs via Jersey / JAX-RS.
• Support applications deployed on WildFly and Apache TomEE, and work across MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, DocumentDB, and Neo4j.
• Maintain and enhance web interfaces (jQuery, Bootstrap, DataTables) as needed.
QA Automation
• Design, build, and maintain automated test suites covering UI, REST APIs, and backend/data layers.
• Build and maintain test automation frameworks (e.g., Selenium or Playwright for UI; REST Assured or Postman/Newman for API; JUnit/TestNG for test structure).
• Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and maintain test data across the application's various databases.
• Perform manual and exploratory testing where automation isn't yet in place; triage and document defects, and work with developers on root cause and resolution.
• Partner with product, development, and QA to define acceptance criteria, test plans, and quality gates for releases.
• Troubleshoot application, database, integration, and automation issues.
• Follow appropriate security and data-handling practices when working with customer, product, and regulatory information.
Required Qualifications
• 5+ years of combined experience across software development and QA/test automation.
• Hands-on experience with Java 8 and Java EE / J2EE application development.
• Working knowledge of MVC architecture, EJBs/Servlets, JPA/Hibernate, JDBC, and DAO/DTO patterns.
• Experience building and testing REST APIs.
• Hands-on experience building test automation frameworks (Selenium, Playwright, REST Assured, or similar) and writing tests in JUnit/TestNG.
• Strong experience with SQL and relational databases, preferably MySQL and/or Microsoft SQL Server.
• Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
• Experience with Git / GitHub.
• Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to quickly learn complex business and technical domains.
Good to Have
• Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
• Experience in regulated industries — life sciences, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food & beverage, cosmetics, or manufacturing.
• Experience with formula, recipe, ingredient, product specification, or regulatory data.
• Experience with performance/load testing tools (e.g., JMeter) or BDD frameworks (e.g., Cucumber).
• Exposure to AWS RDS, DocumentDB, Neo4j, or applications hosted on AWS.
• Experience with Java application servers such as WildFly, JBoss, or TomEE.
• Experience maintaining or modernizing mature enterprise Java applications.
Success in This Role
Success in this role requires more than strong development or QA skills alone. The successful candidate will be able to:
• Move fluidly between building features and building the automated tests that protect them.
• Quickly understand an existing enterprise architecture and contribute effectively without unnecessary disruption.
• Design test coverage that reflects real product, regulatory, and customer-data risk — not just code coverage.
• Balance automation investment with manual/exploratory testing where it adds more value.
• Adapt quickly to new industries and business domains.
• Act as a quality advocate for the team without slowing down delivery.
